Rejection: A Foundational Wound of the Soul

Rejection is one of the deepest wounds of the human soul. It is not merely an external “refusal,” but a shock that imprints a painful belief at the core of one’s being: “I am not worthy of existing.”
Often invisible to others, this wound acts like a silent shadow, influencing your relationships, your decisions, and your dreams, whether pursued or abandoned.
Canadian psychologist Lise Bourbeau, in her book The Five Wounds That Prevent You from Being Yourself, describes rejection as an early wound, often experienced with the parent of the same sex, and sometimes even before birth, when a child is not desired or awaited in an atmosphere of fear.
In psychoanalysis, Donald Winnicott spoke of the importance of holding, the physical and psychological support that reassures the infant.
When lacking, it leaves a deep gap: a fundamental sense of insecurity that may lead the adult to avoid intimacy or to constantly doubt their rightful place.
How it manifests in adult life:
- avoiding emotionally intense situations;
- fear of disturbing others, difficulty expressing one’s needs;
- persistent feeling of being invisible or “too much”;
- striving for perfection in order to finally feel acceptable.
The Five Wounds of the Soul
Lise Bourbeau identified five core wounds that shape the human experience:
- Rejection, leading to avoidance out of fear of non-existence;
- Abandonment, feeding anxiety of being left alone and emotional dependency;
- Humiliation, resulting in self-punishment or self-belittlement;
- Betrayal, creating mistrust and a need for control;
- Injustice, fostering rigidity and perfectionism to compensate for feelings of inferiority.
These wounds do not always originate solely in childhood. They may also arise from transgenerational memories or past-life experiences: abuse, violence, slavery, family secrets, hidden children… deep scars that the soul still carries within its very cells, asking to be acknowledged and released.
Science and Spirituality: The Path to Healing
Healing rejection and the other wounds requires a twofold approach.
Psychological methods:
- Reparenting therapy, becoming for yourself the nurturing parent you longed for;
- Jeffrey Young’s schema therapy to reprogram exclusion and imperfection patterns;
- body-centered therapies (EFT, somatic experiencing) to release cellular memory.
Spiritual practices:
- meditations for reconnecting with your inner child;
- healing circles, where you are seen and welcomed unconditionally;
- gratitude and grounding practices, to transform rejection into a steppingstone toward self-acceptance.
And what if rejection were not proof that you have no place… but an invitation to claim and embody your true place? If these words resonate with you, know that you are not alone.
